Summer heat waves and winter storms are when outages hurt most, and the appliances people want in those moments, a window air conditioner or an electric space heater, are among the hungriest things you can plug in. A large power station can run either one. The real question is for how long.

This guide uses typical wattage ranges and our standard runtime formula. Every runtime below is math from example inputs, not a test result.

Typical watts

Champion Power Equipment's wattage chart lists these typical ranges (checked Nov 1, 2026):

Appliance Running watts Starting watts
Window AC, 5,000 BTU 450-600W 900-1,200W
Window AC, 10,000 BTU 900-1,200W 1,800-2,400W
Space heater 750-1,500W No extra starting watts

Your appliance's label is better than any chart. Many space heaters have a low and a high setting; the label shows the high figure.

Surge is easy; energy is the problem

A 10,000 BTU window AC's startup spike (up to 2,400W in Champion's range) sits well under the surge ratings of the home-backup stations we cover: 8,000W for the EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3, 9,000W for the Anker SOLIX F3800, 10,000W for the BLUETTI AC500 and 14,400W for the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus, per their spec pages (checked Oct 17, 2026). A space heater is a resistive load with no startup spike at all.

What limits you is energy. A 1,500W heater running flat out uses 1,500Wh every hour, which is more than many fridges use in a day.

The formula

Same assumptions as our other guides (both are WattFortress assumptions, not measurements):

  • 90% usable capacity
  • 85% inverter efficiency

Hours = rated Wh × 0.90 × 0.85 ÷ average watts

Air conditioners cycle with the thermostat, so their average draw is below their running watts. We use a 50% example duty cycle for the AC rows. That figure is our assumption; a hot afternoon in a poorly insulated room can push it close to 100%. For the space heater we assume it runs continuously at 1,500W, the worst case.

Runtime table (example inputs)

Power station (rated) Usable AC energy 5,000 BTU AC (600W, 50% duty = 300W avg) 10,000 BTU AC (1,200W, 50% duty = 600W avg) Space heater (1,500W continuous)
BLUETTI AC500 + 1 B300S (3,072Wh) ~2,350Wh ~7.8 h ~3.9 h ~1.6 h
Anker SOLIX F3800 (3,840Wh) ~2,938Wh ~9.8 h ~4.9 h ~2.0 h
EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 (4,096Wh) ~3,133Wh ~10.4 h ~5.2 h ~2.1 h
Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus (5,040Wh) ~3,856Wh ~12.9 h ~6.4 h ~2.6 h
EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra X, 2 batteries (12,288Wh) ~9,400Wh ~31.3 h ~15.7 h ~6.3 h

These figures ignore the station's own idle draw, which shortens runtime further. Our refrigerator guide lists the idle figures some manufacturers publish.

Worked example, DELTA Pro 3 with a 5,000 BTU AC:

  • 4,096Wh × 0.90 × 0.85 = 3,133Wh
  • 600W × 50% = 300W average
  • 3,133 ÷ 300 = about 10.4 hours

The takeaway for heat waves

A small window AC cooling one bedroom overnight is a realistic job for a 3-5 kWh power station, especially if you keep the door closed and set the thermostat a few degrees warmer. Cooling a whole house with window units is not, unless the system is very large or recharged by solar during the day, which conveniently is when air conditioning load peaks.

To stretch runtime:

  1. Cool one room, not the whole floor.
  2. Close blinds on sun-facing windows.
  3. Use a fan (Champion lists window fans at 50-200W) to feel cooler at a higher thermostat setting.
  4. Pre-cool the room before an expected outage while the grid is still up.

The takeaway for winter storms

A space heater drains a power station fast. In our example, even a 5 kWh station lasts under three hours at 1,500W. Better uses of battery power in a winter outage:

  • Keep the gas furnace blower running instead, if you have one. A furnace fan uses far less power than an electric heater; see Can a power station run a gas furnace blower?
  • Run the heater on low (often around 750W, the bottom of Champion's range) for one small, closed room.
  • Use an electric blanket or heated mattress pad, which draws much less than a room heater. Check its label.

If you are considering a fuel-burning heater or a generator instead, follow CPSC's carbon monoxide guidance: never run a generator indoors or in a garage, keep it at least 20 feet from the house, and install battery-powered CO alarms (CPSC, checked Nov 1, 2026). Our Generator vs power station guide covers this in detail.

Plugging in safely

Window ACs and space heaters draw high, steady current. Plug them directly into the power station's AC outlet where possible. If you need an extension cord, use a heavy-gauge cord rated for the appliance's full load, and follow the appliance maker's instructions, since many space heater manuals say not to use extension cords at all. Hard-wiring a circuit to a power station requires a transfer switch or smart panel installed by a licensed electrician.

FAQ

Can a 2,000Wh power station run a window AC overnight? In our 5,000 BTU example (300W average), 2,000 × 0.90 × 0.85 ÷ 300 ≈ 5.1 hours. That covers part of a night, not all of it.

Will an inverter window AC use less? Inverter units ramp the compressor up and down instead of cycling on and off, which can lower average draw. Check the unit's rated watts and measure with a plug-in watt meter.

Can solar keep up with an air conditioner? Sometimes, on sunny days, if the panel array is large enough. Our solar sizing guide shows how to estimate daily solar Wh.
